Today we are celebrating the 11th annual National Play-Doh Day, a holiday that takes me back to my childhood, a carefree time of creative and imaginative memories. But what I didn’t know was that the Play-Doh we have all come to know and love actually began as a wallpaper cleaner!

History shows that Joe McVicker had a squishy modeling compound cleaner used to clean wallpaper, and when he heard from a teacher that the modeling clay the kids used in school was to hard to manipulate, he realized that his cleaning product might just be a great substitute.

The rave reviews were in and McVicker ended up supplying his product to all the schools in Cincinnati. After the ‘new’ modeling clay was introduced in 1955 to a national education convention word continued to spread, and in 1956  McVicker’s ‘wallpaper cleaner’ officially became known Play-Doh, and was followed up with the honor of being inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 1998.

But this is just the beginning, and the fun doesn’t stop here. There are still 10 more Fun Facts you will want to know about Play-Doh, and how you can turn your Play-Doh characters into animated characters with Hasbro’s 2016 new  state-of-the-art upgrade!
