Research has shown that nothing brings a smile to your face or goes viral faster than photograph’s of kids, and pets in costumes; and this Halloween is sure to have it’s share of entertaining laughs and giggles as everyone begins posting their funny, cute, and downright adorable pictures of their fur babies.
But along with all the spooktacular fun family events of the night, you need to keep in mind that for your pets the Halloween season could be a dangerous time if safety precautions are not taken.
According to veterinary emergency critical care specialist, Dr. Justine Lee, “calls increase by 12 percent during the week of Halloween, making it the call center’s busiest time of year.”
Keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be “tricky” when you follow these few simple precautions, which the ASPCA (American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) recommends to help “keep your pet happy and healthy all the way to November 1.”
HIDE THE TREATS – Several Halloween treats can be toxic to dogs and cats, especially dark and baking chocolate. Sugar-free candy and gum that contains the artificial sweetener xylitol can cause serious problems in pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR DECORATIONS – Burning candles can easily be knocked over, especially in a lit pumpkin. Glow sticks, plastic spiders, and crepe paper streamers can all look enticing to your pet and can be easily chewed and swallowed.
PET COSTUMES – Can’t resist turning your family pet member into a superhero, ghost, or goblin? Just be sure your little (or big) one is OK with costumes, some animals love to dress up and others do not. Be sure to select a costume that does not obstruct their movements, vision or ability to breathe.
