Today is National Dog Day! One of the bigger daily holidays, an estimated 200 million plus dog owners in the US will be celebrating and honoring and purchasing gifts for “man’s best friend” today. Dogs are much more than furry little guys who run around and chase birds, bark at the mailman and drool on us. They keep us safe, bring us comfort, and love us unconditionally on a daily basis. Which really helps when us humans are having a bad day.
So how did this all get started?
National Dog Day was created by Animal Advocate Colleen Paige back in 2014. She also is the founder of National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day. Ask you can see, Colleen is serious about her love for animals. Paige created this day, along with others, to draw attention to animals in need.
National Dog Day is our opportunity to show our appreciation for our furry friends that we sometimes take for granted. So what can you or I do to honor all the mutts of the world today.
On the official webpage for National Dog Day, we can celebrate by adopting a dog from your local shelter. If you can’t take on the responsibility of a new pet, you can still help by donating to a shelter. A financial donation, new toys or even your time is something a shelter would appreciate greatly.
If you already own a dog, just go home and him or her know how much they mean to you – and maybe slide them an extra treat at dinner time!
Happy National Dog Day everyone!
