This Friday June 2 we will be celebrating National Donut Day, the holiday that is sure to fill any and all of your jelly-filled, frosted, or powdered sugar sweet tooth cravings.
In the past I have usually done my part to fully participate in celebrating this scrumptious holiday by taste testing a variety of donuts (I wouldn’t want to divulge just exactly how many), but I have to admit, that I have on more than one occasion, found myself explaining what may or may not have happened to the last donut, which may or may not have been eaten by the dog.
Now the history of this wonderfully delicious holiday goes back to 1917 when the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by a group of volunteers known as the Salvation Army Lassies (also referred to as the Doughnut Girls). These brave women went to the front lines in Europe during WWI to help boost morale of the troops by providing home cooked foods.
National Donut Day was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army as their way to say thank you, and to honor the women who had boldly and fearlessly served the soldiers in World War I. They began their first National Donut Day celebration with a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army to help the needy during the Great Depression.
This year’s National Donut Day is cause for a double celebration because it marks the 100 Year Anniversary since the original Lassies served their first donut!
