U.S. Navy Seal Adm. William H. McCraven’s saying, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed,” could just be the mantra for today’s holiday celebration, National Make Your Bed Day, but not everyone seems to share in his enthusiasm, as my husband would attest to.
There seems to be two schools of thought, those that do, and those that don’t, and I guess it would depend on which side of the bed you get up on (pun intended)!
My husband, along with many others, questions the logic behind the effort and time involved in making the bed and refers to it as a “pointless chore.” I on the other hand love to make the bed each morning simply because it makes me feel good.
So who’s right? Well I guess according to the research, we both are. There seems to be both pros and cons when it comes to making or not making your bed each morning.
The pros: Beside the obvious result of a tidy room, it instills a good habit, promotes a more restful night’s sleep, boosts your spirits, and helps create a positive attitude enabling you to rise up and meet the challenges of your day, as shown in Admiral McCraven’s video on the power of making your bed.
The cons: A recent study has shown that making your bed at the start of each day may be damaging to your health, especially if you suffer from asthma or are allergic to dust. It appears that dust mites love the moisture and warmth of a just slept in bed and making it up too quickly could trap them inside, which could be problematic if you suffer from allergies. Leaving your bed unmade appears to be the best solution, allowing the moisture to dry and the dust mites to die off.
Well there you have it, both sides. I know I am still sticking to my side of the bed making dilemma, and my husband is still sticking to his side, but when all is said and done, we will both be meeting in the middle of the bed tonight!
