National Potato Chip Day: It All Began As A Joke

You may have to take today’s holiday celebration with a grain of salt because it’s Potato Chip Day!

Potato chips first showed up early in the 19th century, but the potato chip that we have grown to love today was actually created as a “joke.”

The story goes that Tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt said his French fries were too thick, and he kept sending them back to the kitchen.

That’s when Chef George Crum, of Saratoga Springs in New York decided play a joke on Vanderbilt and cut his spuds as thin as possible.

The result of his well played joke was not what Crum expected, and the beginning the world’s first potato chip came to be.
