Arggghhhh, and Shiver Me Timbers! Have you been wondering why so many people, including radio and TV personalities, are talking in this manner today?
It’s because we’re all trying to channel our inner pirate as we celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day 2018 (and it’s also a great way to practice your pirate lingo should you be thinking of dressing like one this Halloween )
The history of this internationally celebrated holiday goes back more than twenty years and began when two innovative mates, John Baur and Mark Summers, decided to start their own holiday as a fun way to dress and talk like pirates, and their story goes like this…
It seems a few friends were playing racquetball, and instead of yelling out the usual insults or typical “trash talk” most guys do during a friendly competition, they started trash talking and complimenting each other in pirate slang. Why? They’re still not sure and go on to explain.
“On this day, for reasons we still don’t quite understand, we started giving our encouragement in pirate slang. Mark suspects one of us might have been reaching for a low shot that, by pure chance, might have come off the wall at an unusually high rate of speed, and strained something best left unstrained. “Arrr!,” he might have said.”
And now this “pirate talk” between friends has turned into a national holiday of fun for everyone.
Not sure how to talk like a pirate? Then you’ll want to check out the Pirate Lingo that will have you talking like an ‘Old Salt’ in no time!
Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day!
