Today we are celebrating St. Nicholas Day!

Growing up we did not celebrate the actual holiday of St. Nicholas, but in reading some of the traditions of the day I have come to realize that my parents had incorporated many of them into our holiday season.

I love this photo because it brings back memories of my Christmas stocking which always included an orange and nuts, and now I understand the symbolism behind them!

The legend says when St. Nicholas heard of a poor man who had no money for a dowry for his three daughters he traveled to their home and then “tossed three sacks of gold down the chimney for each of the dowries. The gold happened to land in each of the girls’ stockings which were hanging by the fire to dry. The oranges we receive today are a symbol of the gold that was left in the stockings.”

Today’s celebration is all about remembering the kind, giving, and generous spirit behind the legend of St. Nicholas, making this the perfect day for doing a few Random Acts of Kindness.

Happy St. Nicholas Day!
