This Friday June, 23 we will be celebrating the 19th annual Take Your Dog to Work Day, one of the most highly anticipated pet holidays of the year! And why not? What could be more fun than having man’s (and woman’s) best friend and faithful companion right by your side throughout your work day.
This informal unofficial holiday was created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International (PSI) as their way of showing recognition to all the “faithful, furry canines that bring joy to the lives of people everywhere.” Vice-President Beth Stultz of Marketing and Operations at PSI hopes that “Through the events, non-pet owners are able to witness the special bond their co-workers have with their pets firsthand and be encouraged to adopt a new best friend of their own,” as well as raising money for local pet rescue and animal shelter organizations.
We know how much pet parents welcome the opportunity to bring their extended family members to work, but did you know that research has shown that bringing pets into the workplace has oodles of benefits for the employees and your office environment? The top reasons for bringing your dog to work include: reducing stress, increasing productivity, and helping to boost office moral and co-worker bonding, just to name a few.
But even with all the positive benefits that bringing your pet to work has, there are some important things you will need to consider:
- Check with your supervisor and your co-workers to make sure that no one has any pet allergies or pet phobias.
- Be sure that your pet is up to date on all their vaccines.
- Can you pet-proof your office workspace?
- Bring enough food and treats ~ and don’t forget their favorite toy.
- Make sure there is a comfortable place for them to rest during the day.
