Arggghhhh! Today Tuesday, September 19th is National Talk Like a Pirate Day, a day to celebrate as you channel your inner pirate! With Halloween right around the corner, what better way to prepare than with an early pirate party?
Now many of you may be wondering just how this fun day of celebration came to be…
It all began on June 6, 1995, and just like an episode of the hit show “Seinfeld,” this holiday was created about nothing. Okay, not really nothing, but according to the official “Talk Like A Pirate Day” website, the creators of this fun day never thought it would turn out to be a world-wide sensation.
Historically the story goes… “A few friends were playing racquetball and while the game was going on, instead of yelling out the usual insults or typical “trash talk” most guys do during friendly competition, they started trash talking and even complimenting each other in pirate slang. Why? They still aren’t sure as they explain.
On this day, for reasons we still don’t quite understand, we started giving our encouragement in pirate slang. Mark suspects one of us might have been reaching for a low shot that, by pure chance, might have come off the wall at an unusually high rate of speed, and strained something best left unstrained. “Arrr!,” he might have said.
Who knows? It might have happened exactly that way.” Sounds funny right? Well this “pirate talk” between friends has turned into a national holiday of fun.
And now you have your first opportunity to get into pirate mode. You can start by saying “Aaaarrrrgggghhhh” because Krispy Kreme Donuts has decided not to participate in their usual Talk Like A Pirate Day. They stated in their tweet, “As a company we’re not repeating TLAPDay this year,” the company wrote to one customer. “Ahoy! Talk Like a Pirate Day is still a holiday & you can still have fun dressing up. However, we will not be giving away doughnuts for it,” the company stated in another tweet.
But “Avast ye matey” not to worry because Long John Silver’s restaurants still be getting in on the act. Participating restaurants across the US are offering a free deep-fried Twinkie on Sept. 19 when you share your best pirate phrases. And be sure to check out their Facebook page for a chance to win a $25.00 gift card by sharing your favorite pirate joke or phrase!
